Stanley Hallet Releases Publication on First Year Studio at the University of Tunis Carthage – UTC Architecture
The UTC School of Architecture is currently revisiting their design studio content and methodologies and has invited a team of distinguished American educators and architects to participate in three to four week long design studio/ workshops intended to bring a fresh pedagogical approach to both the content and methodology informing the first and second year design studios.
The studio/workshops meet Monday through Friday each week at the beginning of the academic year when and where the professors will explore unique exercises in design developed for introductory and continuing students of architectural design. A team of distinguished American educators and architects have ebeen invited to lead the studios alongside of their Tunisian counterparts. It is the intent of the proposed exercises to inform the development of future studios given at UTC during the following academic years .
The First Year Workshop Studio consists primarily of exercises focused on the exploration of an architectural vocabulary appropriate to both the unique culture and climate of the Tunisian landscape. It will at the same time develop an architectural language consistent with contemporary thought and discourse. The Second Year Workshop Studio will build upon such design strategies applying such lessons to modest architectural proposals at a variety of urban and architectural scales.A l’école d’Architecture de l’U.T.C, les programmes et méthodologies d’apprentissage dans les ateliers d’architecture sont régulièrement repensés afin d’améliorer la qualité d’enseignement. A cet effet, une équipe d’éminents enseignants et architectes américains a été invitée pour participer à un workshop de 3 à 4 semaines dans le but d’amener une approche pédagogique novatrice dans le contenu et la méthodologie d’enseignement de la première et deuxième année en atelier d’architecture.
Le workshop se déroule du lundi au vendredi chaque semaine au début de l’année universitaire. L’enseignement débute par un exercice introductif unique, suivi par des exercices de conception que les étudiants sont appelés à développer sous l’encadrement des enseignants. L’équipe d’enseignants américains dirige le workshop en collaboration avec les enseignants tunisiens. Le but est d’instaurer les bases d’un programme pédagogique qui se développera durant les années universitaires à venir.
En première année, les exercices du workshop mettent l’accent sur l’exploration d’un vocabulaire architectural approprié à la culture, au climat et au paysage tunisien et développe en même temps un langage architectural cohérent avec le langage architectural contemporain. Le workshop de la deuxième année est basé sur la même stratégie, appliquant des principes architecturaux simples, à des échelles architecturales et urbaines variées.The studio workshops are led by Professor Emeritus Stanley Ira Hallet, FAIA, former Dean of the School of Architecture and Planning at The Catholic University of America and Former Studio Head, Paris, France. He is a published author and filmmaker, Fulbright Lecturer and winner of 12 AIA Design Awards. He is joined by Architect Richard Loosle, RA, founder of KUBE architecture, Washington, DC and distinguished design critic and winner of over 30 Design Awards. Other team members include Professor Emeritus Robert Dean Hermanson, Distinguished Professor of Architecture, published author and winner of 15 AIA Awards currently lecturing in Oxford, England and Architect George Martin, former head of Introductory Studios at The Catholic University of America and a published architect and recent winner of the French Gabriel Prize. More recently, the team has been joined by Cindy Nguyen, former director for The Catholic University of America, Paris Architecture Program and field studies instructor, currently working in Bristol, England.Le workshop est dirigé par le professeur Stanley Ira Hallet, FAIA, ex-doyen de l’Ecole d’Architecture et D’urabanisme à la Catholic University of America et responsable du workshop Paris – France, auteur et cinéaste, conférencier Fulbright et lauréat de 12 concours AIA de conception. Il est accompagné par l’architecte Richard Loosle, RA, fondateur de KUBE architecture à Washington, DC et enseignant distingué et lauréat de 30 prix de conception. L’équipe d’enseignants américains comprend également le professeur émérite Robert Dean Hermanson, professeur d’architecture distingué, auteur publié et lauréat de 12 concours AIA de conception et conférencier à Oxford, Angleterre et l’architecte George Martin, ancien responsable de l’atelier préparatoire à la Catholic University of America et auteur publié et récemment lauréat du French Gabriel Prize. Finalement, Cindy Nguyen, ancien responsable du programme de la Catholic University of America à Paris et du travail sur site, actuellement travaillant à Bristol en Angleterre.
